With women making up less than half of all executive producers in film and TV, B2 Entertainment—an Atlanta-based film production company and creators of “Being Bobby Brown”—is doing their part to ensure that percentage continues to steadily increase.

Co-founders and long-term friends Wanda Shelley and Tracey Baker-Simmons share their keys for success to inspire other women in pursuit of their film and TV production dreams:

- Step out on a limb! In the film industry, you are constantly taking risks, such as creating shows before you have a network to broadcast them, securing funding for your entire project or pursuing celebrity talent you may feel uncomfortable approaching. When we decided to create a reality show about Bobby Brown, we aggressively pursued him until he eventually agreed to the concept. Once an investor was in place, we began shooting the series not knowing which network would pick it up!

- Follow the leaders! Identify a female mentor who’s already established in the film industry who can help you along your way, and help motivate you in your endeavors. Visualizing success can be much easier if you already have someone to model your career after. Join an organization, such as one dedicated to the progression of women in film and television. While Tracey’s mentors include Attorney Jeff Smith with Greenberg Traurig and Director and Producer Julie Dash, Wanda’s mentor is Tracey!

- Reach for the stars! Don’t limit yourself in the projects you choose. We not only have additional reality show projects in the works, but also a feature film called “Strange Fruit” and a children’s show featuring the voices of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozanda “Chili” Thomas of the singing group “TLC,” among others.

By having more confidence in themselves and their ideas, and with a little help along the way, women will find it easier to realize their TV and film production dreams.
